For many passionate hoopers, there’s something addictive about the game of basketball of which they just can’t get enough. From the competition to the memories, there’s lots to love about basketball. For the Bright Brothers, the game has been good to them the past few years, especially in the world of 3on3.
Local hoopers and siblings, Daniel and Justin Bright, have grown up battling and supporting each other. Although they went to University High School and Central Valley High School (respectively), the Bright Brothers love playing together. The past few summers, they’ve reunited on the streets of downtown Spokane to achieve 3on3 greatness during Hoopfest Weekend.
“This year, winning our bracket was a lot like last year. We lost a game early and had to work our way through the loser’s bracket, where we played the same team as the year before and in the same situation as before, having to beat them twice in the championship game,” Daniel reminisces. “We were playing against a team we know pretty well, so those games always seem to be a battle of will; they know your game and you know theirs, so you just have to grind it out. Justin and I want the title Hoopfest Champs! That’s our goal every year.”
With trophies and T-shirts as proof that Justin and Daniel achieved their goal of becoming Hoopfest royalty, their team, Charlie’s Gold, won this year’s Men’s 6′ and Under Elite Division. Check out their journey to the top through Bracket #10.
Now that the Bright Bros. have had a taste of 3on3 victory this summer, they’re hungry for more! That’s why they’re taking their hoop skills back to the Entertainment Capital of the World in September for the Las Vegas 3on3 powered by Spokane Hoopfest.
“Last year’s Vegas trip was a fun experience and exciting in a new format and against new competition, which is something you thrive for as a competitor to see where you measure up,” Daniel explains.
Did we mention that Daniel and Justin’s team won their division in last year’s inaugural Vegas 3on3 tournament? #Winning!
“Winning it last year was really fun. The layout was really fun and you can’t beat the feel of Las Vegas. There are so many things to do and so many wonderful sights to see,” Daniel says. “I look forward to going this year, not only to defend the title but to enjoy the atmosphere and what it has to offer.”
With an impressive winning streak, the Bright Bros. and their teammates are eager to head to Vegas.
“We had such a great experience in 2016, we wanted to repeat it this year and help grow the tournament. It’s something my brother and I enjoy doing,” Daniel expresses. “With the thrill of Hoopfest, we want to keep the ball rolling and see if we can repeat as Vegas champions.”
Although Daniel and Justin are talented athletes, it’s 3on3! That means they need two extra teammates to join them in Vegas. And over the years, they have proven to be able to recruit some entertaining and skilled hoopers to their squad.
“We tried to keep our same Hoopfest team together to go down to Vegas. Unfortunately, Steven Vargas [can’t] make it (he runs youth basketball camps in September), but we picked up a new exciting player, Brady Bagby, who has a lot of experience and fared really well when in his bracket and the 6′ and Under Elite Division this year. Add Craig Hanson and that will be our team for Las Vegas 3on3.”
Becoming Vegas 3on3 and Hoopfest Champs was definitely a highlight, but for Daniel, he’s excited to have something else to brag about!
“Kevin Durant, the NBA Finals MVP, coming to Spokane was epic and something I [can] tell the kids about. The same year that Kevin Durant came to Spokane, we won Hoopfest. I think maybe he should show up next year too,” Daniel jokes.
