National Scrapbook Day highlights our Court Monitors!

Every year, we have people who want to get involved with Hoopfest, but are unsure which role to choose. Since today (May 6) is National Scrapbook Day, here’s a look at some amazing Court Monitors who have contributed so much to Hoopfest over the years.

The question Hoopfest Operations Manager, Chad Smith, is asked most often is, ‘can I be a Court Monitor even if I haven’t officiated before?’

The answer is simple: yes!

“Officiating experience isn’t necessary for two-thirds of our courts,” Chad says. “We are looking for people whom are comfortable interacting and engaging with the players and having a fun time.”

Court Monitors often play a role in shaping participant’s level of enjoyment during our tournament weekend. No matter your reffing knowledge, we make an effort to place volunteers in an area where they will be the most successful.

If you don’t have other officiating knowledge, don’t fret. Chad provides training to each Court Monitor to make sure everyone is prepared, and enters the weekend with an understanding of the rules.

“We receive many positive comments from our Court Monitors after the event,” Chad says. “Many are glad they tried it and are wanting to know when they can sign-up for next year’s event. We have Court Monitors who have volunteered for ten years or more. Monitors are the life blood of Hoopfest,” Chad says.
