The Unique Role of Hoopfest

Court Monitors play a unique role in the Spokane Hoopfest experience. They keep the games running smoothly, friendly and on-time. By volunteering the entire weekend, Court Monitors provide consistency for the teams playing on each court. To learn more about the Court Monitor experience, we sat down with Hoopfest’s Operations Manager, Chad Smith.

Q: What are some of the roles and responsibilities of Court Monitors?

CHAD: The Court Monitors are present to make sure games stay on schedule, are played fairly, and good sportsmanship is being observed.

Q: What does it take to be a Court Monitor?

CHAD: Anyone can do it. We have a court for all levels of basketball knowledge. It helps to have volunteers who are friendly, energetic and engaged in the action.

Q: What is something not everyone knows about being a Court Monitor over Hoopfest weekend?

CHAD: Not every Court Monitor needs to be a referee. In the high school and adult divisions of Hoopfest, players call their own fouls. Only in our youth division do Court Monitors officiate the games.

Q: What is something you want new volunteer Court Monitors to know?

CHAD: Court Monitors, who commit for the entire weekend, receive a great package of Nike gear, including shoes!

Each year, Hoopfest provides a Nike hat, T-shirt, shorts and shoes for Court Monitors who work the whole weekend. And this year we’re offering even more to show our gratitude for all their hard work! We’re holding a raffle with some pretty sweet prizes and the sooner our court monitors sign up, the higher chance they’ll have of winning one of the four options below:

  • A Fan Cave Package including a 65″ 4K Smart LED TV w/ HDR and a Klipsch R10B Soundbar courtesy of Huppin’s
  • Two-night stay at the Davenport during Hoopfest weekend
  • Free Uber rides during the weekend of Hoopfest
  • $300 gift certificate at Northern Quest Spa courtesy of DCT Controls

Court monitors who apply earlier get entered into the raffle more times, so be sure to apply ASAP!

  • April applicants – 25x
  • May applicants – 10x

The raffle drawing will take place on June 1st. You must fulfill the duties of the full weekend to receive the prize packages.

Sign up here to be a Court Monitor to ensure a weekend with us and your name in the raffle! For more information, head to our website or contact Chad Smith at chad@spokanehoopfest.net with any further questions.
